Yamaha has launched the Ray scooter in the Indian market at a starting price of 46,000 ex-showroom Delhi. Yamaha chose Hyderabad, the city of Nizams to launch its first product in the scooter segment.
The Ray was first displayed at the 2012 Auto Expo and the company hinted at aggressive pricing. The scooter is powered by a 113cc engine mated to a CVT, automatic transmission which develops 7.1PS at 7500rpm and 8.1Nm of torque. The scooter does 0-60 kmph in just 12 seconds and the company claims the Ray will deliver fuel efficiency of 62.1kmpl
The scooter will be available in six colours, pink, black, blue, burgundy, purple and grey the Ray is primarily targeted to females.
The company has signed up Bollywood diva Deepika Padukone as the face of Yamaha Scooters in India.
Yamaha is targeting a 20% market share by 2016 and to achieve this target the company is working towards building the Chennai plant by 2014.
Yamaha may go the Hero way by first launching a product to meet the expectations of the fairer sex and may consider more masculine scooters in future.
Yamaha will face stiff competition from Honda Dio, Hero Pleasure, Suzuki Swish and the TVS Wego.
