Toyota is getting very aggressive in the Indian market. The Etios and Etios Liva have helped the gain volumes, but Toyota may not sit quite. To push sales of Fortuner further the Japanese car maker plans to plonk a 2.5 litre diesel engine in the SUV. The company will use the BS IV, 2KD-FTV, Diesel engine with Intercooler Turbocharger, 4 Inline Cylinder which also does the duty on the Innona MUV in India. The engine will tuned to produce max power of 144Ps@3,400 rpm and a healthy torque of 343Nm@ 1,600-2,800rpm.
The Fortuner with a 2.5 diesel engine is already on sale in the Thai market and come in the above configuration. Toyota Thailand has launched the SUV with updated engine and a new 5 speed gear box on the 2.5 diesel engine. In India the Fortuner gets a 4 speed Auto box which could soon be replaced with the new 5 speed option.
The new engine will help the company to price the SUV in the range of 18-20 lakhs depending on the variant. Toyota has asked its parent company to consider setting up of a diesel engine plant in India, buoyed by the rapidly increasing demand for diesel vehicles. With local manufacturing costs could curtail down further.
Toyota Fortuner is currently available in the 3.0 litre diesel engine with 2 drive options: 4×2 and 4×4. The 4×2 also comes with Automatic option.
