The Indian car market has defined new segments which are now also getting popular in other developing markets. The small car segment is one example and another is the compact sedan.
Tata Motors first launched the Indigo CS which gave birth to the compact sedans. The popularity made the others follow and Maruti Suzuki launched the Swift Dzire which became an instant hit. Honda also followed the suit and will launch the Amaze sedan based on the Brio platform. Mahindra too plans to launch a compact sedan (Check out the Verito Spy pics)
Are we missing a big player in the Indian market?. Yes, Hyundai is also working on a compact sedan. The company will be launching another compact car positioned between the i10 & i20 codenamed HB. According to our close sources the South Korean car maker will be launching a sedan based on the HB platform and will be offered in both petrol & diesel engines.
Many sources have reported, the company plans to launch a sedan based on the i10 platform. But we feel Hyundai will not launch the i10 based sedan and will launch a compact sedan based on the HB platform. The launch of a new sedan may also do away with the ageing Accent which has reached the end of life cycle.
Hyundai also plans to launch more models in the Indian market to up its share and get closer to Maruti Suzuki, which is the biggest player in the Indian market.
