India’s largest car maker Maruti Suzuki India riding high on the success of its newly launched Alto K10 AMT and Celerio AMT is contemplating another AMT budget hatchback for the Indian market. It wouldn’t be an all-new car, instead the company is planning to roll out the Wagon R Stingray with an AMT gearbox, says a report on Autocar India. Maruti Suzuki has tasted immense success and the Wagon R being the 4th best seller is quite naturally to benefit from this technology.
The WagonR Stingray is powered by the same 1.0-litre K10 petrol engine which is also available on the Celerio & Alto K10 and churns out 68 PS of power and 90Nm of torque. The WagonR is a popular car in India due its tall boy body design and large cabin space.
The AMT models already command a huge waiting period and it could be further challenging once the Stingray AMT is introduced. Expect the Stingray to command a premium of Rs. 30-50 thousand and could most likely be offered on the top end VXi variant only.
Magnetti Marelli which supplied the AMT gear box is planning to set-up a dedicated facility at the company’s Manesar facility which could help to meet the demand at a faster pace and also reduce the long waiting periods.
