With auto sales down, the Goa government has decided to slash road tax by 50 per cent on purchase of new vehicles for a period of three months to boost the auto industry
With festivals like Dussehra and Diwali coming up, the state government’s decision will help the sluggish auto industry according to state Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho.
As per a transport department official, there was a decline of 15 to 17 per cent in the overall registration of vehicles in the state during first four months of the current financial year.
A total of 19,480 vehicles were registered from April to July this year, he said.
Currently, two-wheelers costing up to Rs 1.5 lakh are taxed 9 per cent of the vehicle’s cost, and for those in the range of Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 3 lakh, the tax is 12 per cent. Vehicles costing above Rs 3 lakh are charged 15 per cent tax.
For four-wheelers up to Rs six lakh, the tax is nine per cent, while those upto Rs 10 lakh are charged 11 per cent. Vehicles costing Rs 10 lakh to Rs 15 lakh are charged 11 per cent tax and those costing more have to pay 13 per cent.
Auto Industry sales have seen decline pan India and the government has taken measures to help improve sales, but there seems to be no much of an impact.
Goa has a vehicle population of 13.82 lakh as of January this year while the state’s population is around 16 lakh. Vehicle sales have dropped 15 per cent in the first four months of this financial year in Goa. In April to July 2019, 19,485 vehicles were sold as against 22,480 in the corresponding period last year
