What makes a good biking road? To some extent it depends on personal taste, for instance some people prefer a burn out on a German autobahn whilst others prefer a more leisurely ride through the countryside with wonderful views and sweeping bends, so if you are planning a motorcycle ride it is worthwhile spending some time planning your route.
Although we tend to dismiss biking in the UK compared to biking in Europe there are some excellent motorcycle roads here for all kinds of bikers. Admittedly we can go for 160 mph burn-outs in the UK, but we can still enjoy long stretches of open roads, thrilling rides full of challenging bends, twists and turns, long coastal rides, and some of the best scenery you can find anywhere. Compared with much of Europe the UK is just like a huge country park.
That said, if we are really seeking excitement and challenge what could be better than tackling an Alpine mountain pass or for long sweeping runs with stunning views a ride along the D186 in France, a firm favourite amongst motorcyclists who love the winding open road.
The UK is also let down by its weather and the physical state of its roads. Perhaps there is not much we can do about the former, but in terms of potholes and other road hazards we are one of the worst countries in Europe. If bikers were in charge of fixing potholes things would be different; they all know how painful and dangerous pot holes can be.
If you do decide to go to Europe of your biking holiday then make sure that you are properly prepared. European laws tend to be different from those in the UK. You will need to have with you your full driving licence (paper counterpart and photo-card), your registration document, your passport and your insurance certificate.
