JLR India eyeing a mid-2013 launch for the updated Freelander 2

It’s been over a year since Land Rover began assembly of the Freelander 2 in India. Priced at 35-lakh rupees (ex-showroom New Delhi), the baby-Land Rover is a good alternative to its German rivals. The SUV had recently received a mild nip and tuck at the Moscow International Motor Show and the company now plans to update the Indian spec as well.

We have received a confirmation from JLR India’s official twitter account that they are looking at an April 2013 launch for the facelift. As mentioned in the tweet, the exact date is yet to be finalized and will be in the mid-2013 ballpark.

Coming to the car itself, here’s a quick roundup of the changes on the 2013 Land Rover Freelander 2:

  • LED lights with daytime running lamps on the headlamp cluster
  • 17-inch alloy wheels with three new body colors
  • LED’s on the redesigned tail-lamp cluster
  • New centre console and switches on the Terrain Response dial
  • New 5-inch screen that displays vehicle related information such as gear positions, fuel and temperature readout
  • “Passive Start” system that replaces the key-docking system
  • New Intelligent electronic parking brake that applies varied braking force based on the surface or incline
  • Meridian audio system available with a choice of 380W or 825W sound outputs

Power comes from the same – 2.2-litre 150PS TD4 and 190PS SD4 diesel engines with 4WD. Both the variants get a six-speed automatic transmission and you also get the much touted, Land Rover Terrain Response System as standard.

Expect a marginal price-bump at the launch of the facelift in April. In the mean time, watch out for some tempting deals on the outgoing model with the year coming to an end.
