Tata Motors is still betting on the old and humble Indica platform which gave birth to the Indica way back in 1998. The new Vista was meant to replace the Indica completely and the company did plan to discontinue for a brief period of time.
But the Vista could not manage the magic numbers the Indica did for Tata Motors. The company then gave in a new life to the Indica and launched new refreshed variants of the same. The Indica along with the Vista has been selling around 10,000 units per month. The Indica is popular for the space, features and value for money proposition.
Tata now plans to spawn a new model on the XL wheelbase on which the current Indigo XL is made. The company is testing rigorously around Pune. On the exteriors the Indica will retain the same shape and may get its headlamp and grille design from the Indigo eCS compact sedan. On the interiors the dash will quite unlikely change and may get rear air vents in addition to it.
The Indica XL may be powered by the fuel efficient CR4 diesel engine which returns a mileage of 25 kmpl. A CNG and LPG variant could also be added along with the 1.2 petrol engine option.
The launch still seems to be unknown at the moment but will certainly make it into the markets by second half of 2012. Tata may price it aggressive in the 3 lakh range to attract a large number of fleet operators and also customers who are looking for additional rear comfort.
